Solidarity Breaks Chains

On the 9th of August 2011 the large hall upstairs in the Forest Cafe was transformed into an event space to increase awareness of RAWA and raise funds for their inspiring cause.

Since all events are free at the Forest Cafe, all of the money raised for RAWA was through people contributing a suggested donation of £3 at the door. There were also RAWA zines and patches on sale which helped to add to this. Thank you to everyone who donated generously, everyone who provided free entertainment for the event, and those who helped set up the space – as a result of your efforts we raised £200 for RAWA! A special thanks also to the Forest Cafe for providing the space, the volunteer sound engineers, and folks behind the bar.

Bands who volunteered to come and play in aid of the event included – A folk band called Dirty Fist from Gainsville Florida. Ste McCabe (a queer, feminist one-man-band) who played a fun set on his electric guitar, spoke passionately of RAWA’s struggle, and also donated several of his CD’s to be sold in aid of RAWA. Local Riot Grrl band, Scragfight, came through from Glasgow to play to their ever growing Edinburgh fan base, and got people off their seats and dancing to the beats. Finally, Malicious Mischief finished off the evening with energetic political anarcho-ska-punk. Members of Malicious Mischief were also responsible for designing the poster for the show and doing all the publicity for the event. Thanks to all of you!
